A police sergeant who allegedly shot his common-law wife during an argument at their home has been granted $200,000 approval bail on a charge of grievous bodily harm.
Dale Ramroop, 48, last assigned to the Princes Town Police Station, was also given a cash bail of $20,000.
But, San Fernando Senior Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor granted him bail on the condition that he moved out of the home he shared with the victim Nicolette Persad, who is also a policewoman.
He was also ordered to surrender his passport, stay 150 feet away from her and have no communication with her either directly, indirectly or through a third party.
Ramroop who has 28 years service was not called upon to plead to the charge, which alleged that on February 18 at Ramdhanie Trace, Mohess Road, Penal he shot at Persad with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.
It is alleged the couple had just returned home when they argued, during which Persad was shot twice in the chest area.
The officer was arrested by his colleagues and remained in custody until his appearance yesterday. He was charged by Ag ASP Williams.
There was a mix-up about what court he was supposed to have appeared before, but he eventually appeared in the First Court.
Prosecutor Cleyon Seedan did not object to Ramroop being granted bail but requested that conditions be attached to it.
Seedan said the victim remains at the San Fernando General Hospital in a stable condition.
In asking for bail, attorney Subhas Panday said Ramroop had no previous convictions or pending matters and was willing to comply with any conditions imposed by the court.
Panday said Ramroop was the father of three children, two were studying abroad and the third child is three-years-old. He said Ramroop would be residing with his brother in St Mary’s Village, Moruga.
His passport was surrendered to the court and the matter was adjourned to March 25.
