In a new twist to the deadly Pennywise Super Centre heist in La Romain last week, attorneys representing the parents of a nine-year-old boy who was grazed in the face by a bullet while with his family in a car, has initiated an investigation with the Police Complaints Authority (PCA).
The parents retained attorney CJ Williams, who yesterday confirmed PCA director David West had started a probe to determine whether the bullet that grazed the boy was police-issued.
Police were chasing a group of men who robbed and killed two security officers and wounded a third while the officers were transporting cash from Pennywise’s La Romain centre, when the incident allegedly occurred.
The boy’s father, Dwayne Asson, is a member of the T&T Coast Guard.
Yesterday, attorney Williams said the investigations follow an allegation by Asson that it was a police bullet that injured his son during the September 19 incident. Williams said Asson’s family requested accountability and an explanation for his injury.
The boy, a Siparia RC School pupil, is still recovering from surgery at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Allied Security officers Jeffrey Peters, 51, and Jerry Stuart, 49, were killed by gunmen after their vehicle was ambushed while leaving Pennywise’s La Romain compound. Their colleague, Peola Baptiste, 57, is still critical in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, recovering after surgery.
Allister Harris, 47, a security officer employed with another company, was also shot during the incident and treated.
Four suspects, Greg Dodough, Deaundre Montrose and brothers Kyle and Keyon Ramdhan, were shot dead by police at a house in La Romain after they were pursued by officers following the heist.
Currently, four other suspects are facing gun-related charges after being arrested by police during the manhunt following the heist. Police also detained a soldier whose vehicle the dead men used during their escape attempt, but later released him after his attorney filed a habeas corpus petition.
