With images of elderly people withstanding rain and sun to get vaccinated dominating the news last week, councillors at the Point Fortin Borough Corporation (PFBC) are taking charge of getting their senior members to their appointment.
In a media release, the PFBC said it started this service yesterday and would continue until Friday.
Residents who are 65 years old and over can call their councillor to arrange vaccination appointments on their behalf.
The councillors will also provide transportation to the elderly from their homes to the Point Fortin Health Centre and back.
Mayor Saleema Thomas said such a service is in keeping with the council’s overall vision of catering to the special needs of older persons in the community, especially during a pandemic.
Last week, councillor for Cap-de-Ville/Fanny Village, Bryana Fortune-John, kick-started the process in her electoral district by compiling the names of residents 65 years old and over to assist those who were not yet vaccinated.
“This move was welcomed by the Council, and the service was then extended throughout the entire borough. How to book an appointment? Older burgesses from any of the six electoral districts, who are willing to be vaccinated, should first call their local councillor, giving their name, address, age, date of birth, and contact number. This information, when compiled daily, is fed to the local health facility to have scheduled appointments arranged. Those with finalised appointments will be contacted and transportation sent to their homes to be taken to the health centre,” the release stated.
The health centre accommodates three people per hour between 8 am to 2 pm.
Those vaccinated will remain under observation for approximately 30 minutes after their shot. The PFBC said all COVID-19 health protocols would be in place to ensure a safe journey to and from the health centre.
