A day after three men attempted to steal a taxi from the San Fernando to Macaulay taxi stand, calls are being made for the police to increase patrols on High Street, San Fernando.
Speaking to Guardian Media, the president of the Macaulay Taxi Drivers Association Hemraj Narine said police were turning a blind eye to the PH drivers who are operating freely from the recognised taxi stands.
He said PH drivers were bullying legitimate taxi drivers and dominating the stands.
"There are many unruly PH drivers. The Chaguanas to Couva drivers are plying for hire to Chaguanas and Curepe on the Macaulay stands. We have had several meetings and the authorities said they will solve the problems in taxi stands. We are fed up because law enforcement in San Fernando is not helping us. We are being threatened, bullied, and enough is enough," Narine said.
He said apart from the PH drivers, maxi-taxi drivers were now flouting the laws by coming up High Street between the hours of 5 am to 6 pm.
"This is illegal. We pointed it out to police and they drove off on us," he added.
Narine noted that when the three bandits tried to steal the taxi, there was no police officer around.
"The police took half an hour to respond. By then the bandits are gone. We are calling on the police to do more to stop illegal PH drivers from coming to our stands. We have written letters and sat in meetings. We are fed up. Law enforcement in San Fernando is poor at this time," he added.
