The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO) has disqualified two finalists, the winner and third place winner, of the 2023 Junior Calypso Monarch for breach of a rule, stripping them of their prizes.
In a release yesterday, TUCO said at their March 3 meeting, a decision was taken to rescind the February 13 results to reflect the disqualification of the two.
The rule was Rule 3.4, which says, “Each contestant will be required to sing one calypso. All calypsoes must comprise no less than three verses minimum and four verses maximum. The calypso must not have been rendered in any competition before Ash Wednesday, 2022.”
TUCO said the Junior Calypso Committee chair Thora Best received complaints, investigated and verified them. TUCO said parents of the finalists were informed of the decision.
St Francois Girls’ College’s A’Janae King Fraser was declared the winner.
Marcus McDonald, of Presentation College (San Fernando) and Josiah Jordan (Morvant Laventille Secondary) were initially declared monarch and third-place winner.
