Two men—19 and 18 years—were shot and wounded by police officers on Wednesday evening, in an incident in Petit Valley.
According to a police report, at about 6.30 pm, one of the men was seen with a firearm in his waist, walking along Humming Bird Circular, off Simeon Road.
Residents called the police and a team of officers from the Four Roads Police Station's CID, Inter Agency Task Force and the Joint Police and Army Patrol responded.
Police said both men opened fire on the officers, forcing a police officer to return fire.
The men subsequently escaped behind a house nearby.
The officers searched a river where they saw both suspects walking up from the river onto a concrete platform.
When the officers called out to them, one of the suspects pointed a gun at the officers.
Police returned fire, shooting both men.
One of the suspects was shot in the waist and arm; the other was shot in the buttocks and waist.
Both men were taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where they were treated and warded.
Police recovered from the scene one Ruger pistol with a magazine and four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Investigations are ongoing.
