Six months after pleading to the public for help to repair his home, a young visually impaired man has been robbed.
Brandon Ramkissoon, 24, lost his phone and other belongings to men claiming to be police. The incident occurred moments after electricity was restored during Tuesday’s outage that affected some parts of Trinidad.
In an interview with Guardian Media yesterday, Ramkissoon explained how the situation unfolded.
“I was by uncle on Tuesday and then I leave and went by another cousin for five minutes and then the current went. They say stay until the current come back because suppose you walking in the dark and you get robbed,” he recalled.
It was while making his way back to his Mc Clean Trace home in Las Lomas after the power outage that tragedy struck. The darkness, not his nemesis this time.
He said, “They didn’t rob in the dark, they robbed in the light.”
Ramkissoon explained how in a few minutes, bandits posing as police officers left him rattled.
“The driver say you have anything illegal, cocaine, you does smoke? I say no, he say ‘corporal, corporal come out and search him, he not telling the truth’ and when he come out he ask the same question and he take my radio, a bowl with food and I had a bag, he dip he hand and take my Samsung A13.”
Despite his disability, Ramkissoon has never been daunted, he has been living alone following his father’s death and has been sharpening his skills as a disc jockey, as he hopes to find employment through the skill.
But now, Ramkissoon said given his medical condition, not being able to connect leaves him in a vulnerable position.
“I does suffer from high blood pressure, if something happen to me, I can’t contact anyone. Also, my safety now at risk as well.”
According to Ramkissoon, the matter was reported to the Las Lomas police. He said officers categorically rejected being behind the attack.
Executive officer of the T&T Blind Welfare Association, Kenneth Suratt, yesterday condemned the attack and called for more to be done to protect the most vulnerable in society.
