Traditionally, and perhaps guided by culture, my parents and elders used to drill into us to vote DLP, vote ULF, vote NAR, now the breakaway from NAR and incarnation of the ULF, the UNC.
Here we are now in 2020, we compare the two parties, discounting racial divide, let us compare a few of the burning issues voters want answered and who to vote for.
Security: The UNC under Basdeo Panday holds the edge, under Kamla, who cannot claim Panday’s successes and Rowley it is a close race.
Healthcare: The way the PNM handled and is handling the pandemic, they are way ahead, considering the utterances of Kamla about prematurely reopening the borders for nationals without consideration for accommodations.
Economy: Again the UNC under Panday holds the edge, under Kamla compared to the PNM, it is a close race with UNC slightly ahead. Only because of “where to put Colm” but here he can be controlled.
Education: The “education for all” mantra was all Panday, Kamla was Minister of Education at the time and had to implement as instructed. PNM educated most of the people of this country since Eric Williams time come straight down to Rowley. While Rowley also cannot claim Williams’ successes, in his own right continued in the same vein. So PNM is way ahead in spite of Kamla promises of laptops for secondary school students.
Corruption perception: With certain individuals still visually involved and some still running for office with the UNC out of a score of 10 with 10 being the worse, UNC will get a 9+ and PNM will get a 2 to 3.
Experience: For very important things, like building a house, will you hire a mason with four months experience or one with 10+ years experience? Nuff said.
Weighting the above, putting tradition and race aside, to run this country the PNM will be much better for all of our future. I ask all readers to choose wisely on August 10 and secure our future.
