Chequeda Deboulet's name rang out loud at clear at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) in Tacarigua yesterday, when the final of the T&T Badminton Association's Senior Nationals Women's Singles and Doubles were played.
The 16-year-old badminton ace won her first ever Senior National title by defeating an in-form Rhea Khan in the final 21-9, 21-16. Deboulet who won nearly every tournament she participated in last year, including the Solo Nationals which earned her the right to be the badminton association's nominee at the First Citizens Sports Foundation Awards recently, was the overwhelming favourite to claim the crown after beating last year's winner Blake 21-16, 21-19 in the semifinals on Friday night.
In the mixed doubles, Deboulet partnered with her Shuttleforce teammate Nathaniel Khillawan, the men's number one seed who lost by a walkover to Sheraz Nabbie in the quarterfinals, to beat the pair of Blake and Jade Allman in the final 22-20, 21-17.
Deboulet then received her third title in the women's doubles when her combination with Johanna Walker proved to be unstoppable against the team of Ananda Ramsingh and Sandhya Cassie in straight sets 21-18, 21-16.
Meanwhile, Will Lee was crowned the men's singles champion when he got the better of his teammate Alistair Espinoza in the final 17-21, 21-10 and 21-11. Later the Shuttleforce pair of (Lee/Espinoza) clobbered the team of Vance Juteram and Allman 21-9, 21-13 for the men's doubles title.
