Naparima College surged to the top of the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) on Monday with a 1-0 victory over St Mary’s College at Serpentine Road in St Clair, Port-of-Spain.
Jayden Caprietta scored the lone goal in the 40th minute to take their tally to 34 points in 14 matches, and they are well-positioned to take the title; however, it will depend on the result of their final match.
Their close rivals, St Benedict’s College, are in the second position with 33 points, and like Naparima College, to whom they lost a week ago, they will have to win their final game to walk away with the crown. The SSFL has been covering matches that were not able to be played in the past, with the hope that all teams will be able to take the field on the final day of action.
Last year’s League winner, Fatima College, has played itself out of successfully defending it with a 2-1 loss to St Anthony’s College, which left them on 29 points and one match to go. It means that even with a victory, Fatima would only reach 32 points.
Meanwhile, Signal Hill Secondary moved to sixth on the standings on 22 points and is well on course for the title with five matches to be played when they defeated Queen’s Royal College 2-0 at QRC’s home ground on Serpentine Road. They will move to 37 points if they can only win their remaining matches. Immanuel Wright opened the scoring for the Tobagonians in the 34th minute before Jermaine Morgan added the insurance goal on the stroke of regulation time.
