T&T senior women’s team striker Kennya “Yaya” Cordner scored the winner for Fenerbache in their come-from-behind 2-1 triumph over Ankara BSB Fomget GSK in the 12-club Turkish Women’s Football League Super League at the Dereagzi Lefter Tesisleri, Istanbul on Sunday.
The win for the 33-year-old Cordner, the 2021 Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation “Senior Women’s Player of the Year” awardee and Fenerbache was their third in four matches for nine points and a share of the second spot with Fatih Vatan Spor and Muratpasa, three behind unbeaten leaders Besiktas while Fomget stayed fifth on the table with four other clubs on six points each,
from four matches.
Fomget led 1-0 at the half-time interval thanks to a 44th-minute strike from Turkey international midfielder Fatos Yildirim.
However, 14 minutes before the final whistle, Shameeka Fishley drew Fenerbache level and with four minutes left in regulation time, substitute Cordner, who only recently recovered from the coronavirus was on spot to poke home the winner from less than six yards out.
It was the second goal of the league campaign for Cordner who was also on target in a 2-1 loss to Beşiktaş on December 18, 2021.
The T&T international and her teammates will be back in action on Wednesday against Fatih Vatan Spor followed by a clash with eight-placed Amed SK (six points) on January 16.
Last November, the Tobago-born Cordner inked a deal with Fenerbache after lifting the women’s league crown with IL Sandviken in Norway.
A former Signal Hill Secondary and Young Harris College student, Cordner who has netted 38 goals in 44 appearances for the senior women’s team after making her debut at 15-years-old has so far enjoyed an illustrious career featuring for no less than seven other international clubs.
They included Northampton Laurels FC (2007), Kvarnsvendens IK (2009), Brisbane Roar (2011), Seattle Reign Reserves (2013), Seattle Reign FC (2013), Seattle Sounders (2014), FC Dallas Women (2017), Sportivo Limpeno (2017), and Sandviken scoring a combined 60-plus goals.
