Chelsea Fong of WASA table tennis club, and Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC) duo Chloe Fraser and Derron Douglas served up some fantastic performances at this weekend's Solo Junior National Table Tennis Championships on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua.
Fong caused a major upset in the Girls Under-21 singles final, beating defending champion Brittany Joseph of QPCC, 3-2mto win one of three gold medals. She also claimed the Girls U-18 singles title and joined forces with N'Kosi Rouse to take the U-21 mixed doubles crown.
The WASA player had the ideal start in the singles title-match against Joseph, comfortably winning the first two sets, 11-6, 11-8. Unfortunately she dropped the second sets by the same margin, 8-11, 8-11, setting up an intense final set. However, it was the triple gold-medal winner dominating the deciding set, 11-8.
Fong repeated as the U-18 singles champion. That final was just as rugged as the senior category, facing off against Shreya Maharaj of Carenage Blasters and came away with another hard fought, 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8) victory.
Similarly, the effort in the mixed double final was also evident as Fong and Rouse combined well to overpower Blasters' pair of Maharaj and Luc O'Young to get another 3-2 win, 12-10, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10.
Sharing in the spotlight was Parkite Fraser, who won gold in four categories, the U-11 and U-13 singles titles and also in the U-21 and mixed U-15 doubles crowns linking with Joseph and Imani Edwards-Taylor, respectively.
Fraser topped Ashlea Mohammed (ATTC), 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-1) in the U-13 final, downed Layllana Boodhan of Warrenville United, 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-5) in the U-11 finale and with Edwards-Taylor defeated Rebekah Sterling/Jewel Nadhan (Blasters), 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-6) in the mixed doubles decider.
In the U-21 competition, three pairs of teams battled for supremacy and it was Fraser and Joseph emerging unbeaten to take the top prize.
Douglas won both the U-21 and U-18 titles by a 3-1 won margin after withstanding same opponent Jesse Dookie of Blasters in each final. He partnered with Joshua Maxwell and they bested Rouse and Mikhail Dookie, 3-0 (11-8, 11-3, 14-12.
