T&T's Dwight St Hillaire continued his excellent showing this season, pulling away to win the men's 400 metres dash at the Kentucky Invitational at the University of Kentucky (UK) Track and Field Complex in Lexington, Kentucky, USA on Saturday.
He won in a time of 45.81 seconds to be among UK's 19 victories at the two-day event. St Hillaire also placed second in the 200m with a wind-assisted 20.51 (3.0). Later, he was part of the men's 4x100m relay victorious team, anchoring them across to line in 39.54.
Another T&T athlete Eric Harrison also had a successful outing for Ohio State at the Jesse Owens Invitational hosted by his institution, which ran from Friday to Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
Harrison completed the sprint double winning the men's 100m in a wind-assisted 10.22 (2.6), this after advancing with the fastest qualifying time of 10.22 (4.0) from the preliminary heats.
He sprinted to victory in the 200m, crossing first in a very windy 20.73 (7.6). Harrison also nabbed gold in the 4x100m, making the second handover to see his team over the line in 39.56. He and his Ohio State teammates just missed out on a top three finish in the 4x400, placing fourth with 3:20.00.
Purdue freshman Naomi Campbell was hoping to do the same in the women's version of the sprint events but she was unsuccessful. She had the ninth fastest time of 11.99 (4.1) out of the preliminary heats in the 100m but reached the final after two qualifiers opted out the medal race. The first-year student/athlete clocked 11.85 (4.3) to finish seventh.
In the 200m timed final, her 24.82 (4.1)-clocking placed her 12th. However, she didn't leave empty-handed though as she part of the Purdue quartet in the 4x100, who sealed a silver with a time of 45.43.
Mississippi State sophomore Tyriq Horsford was a second-place finisher in the men's javelin throw at the Maroon and White Invite in Mississippi. He tossed the spear 72.20m to win a silver.
At th M City Classic in Minneapolis, Kion Benjamin of Minnesota sprinted to gold in the men's 100m. The freshman clocked 10.25 (2.0) for the win and also got gold and silver in the relay events. His team won the 4x400m (3:12.49) and placed second in the 4x100m (40.11).
On Saturday at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Invitational at the Bernie Moore Track in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, both University of Alabama athletes Cherisse Murray and Joshua St Clair copped silver while LSU's Akanni Hislop did not success in his lone event.
Murray, a junior, placed second in the women's shot put with a 16.76m-throw while St Clair, another third-year student/athlete, helped his team to the runner-up spot in the men's 4x400m relay event with 3:12.77. He also competed in the 400m and placed 13th with a 47.95-clocking.
LSU senior Hislop's 21.24 (-0.3) timing placed him 11th in the men's 200m.
Texas A&M junior University's (TAMU) Tyra Gittens featured in one event at the Alumni Muster, a field events meet, in College Station, Texas and finished eighth in the women's javelin throw. The NCAA pentathlon and high jump champion sent the spear 37.19m.
University of South Florida (USF) sophomore Kadesha Prescott raced in two events at the North Florida Invite but only had success in the team event. She helped her squad finish second in the women's 4x100m (44.20). This after placing 14th in the women's 100m with 11.87 (-1.7) in the preliminary round and did not advance to the final.
Rae-Ann Serville of the University of Southern California (USC) raced in the women's 400m at the UCLA v USC Dual Meet in Los Angeles, California on Sunday. The freshman placed seventh with 53.08.
Northern Iowa freshman Jabari Fox and scholmate sophomore Onal Mitchell faced off in the men's 4x400m relay at the Illinois State Invitational meet over the weekend. Fox ran the third leg for Northen Iowa "B" team, helping his unit cross fourth in 3:19.65 while Mitchell's "A" team was disqualified.
On Friday, Alisha St Louis of Eastern Michigan had mixed results in the jump events at the Golden Grizzlies Mini Meet at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. The graduate student/senior topped the women's triple jump with 11.46m and finished fourth in the long jump with 5.31m (7.8).
