Tahirah Hollingsworth helped Police Youth Club (PYC) stay on course to finish runner-up in the Premiership Division of the Courts All Sectors Netball League after beating Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) Sparks, 44-20 on Thursday evening.
This was in the second match of a doubleheader played at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua. In the opening match, third-place Defence Force battled to a 38-31 victory over winless Las Lomas.
Hollingsworth, the goal-attack, led with 23 goals from 42 attempts and her goal-shooter men's player Fabrice Fisher was a bit more accurate in getting his 21 goals from 27 tries.
The shooters had the PYC team ahead at the end of each quarter, 7-4 in the first, 17-10 at halftime and in the third, 29-16, before completing the 22-goal win to cement its place in the second spot behind champion Fire Service, who claimed the title following its unbeaten run this season. Today, a win against PYC will see the fire officers complete a flawless season.
Sparks, who had men's player Dave Alexander contributing the bulk of their goals with 12 of 28 as the goal-attack, will be back on the court this afternoon in their final league match of the season against Defence Force, which is coming off a narrow seven-point victory over Las Lomas.
Goal-attack Kerry McMillan was the leading scorer for Defence Force with 26 from 39 while Las Lomas' men's player Immanuel Russell was best with 15 in 24 in a losing effort.
Initially, Las Lomas held the advantage, leading 10-7 at the end of the first quarter but faded in the second period to trail 21-14 at the half. The army/coastguard combination unit remained ahead into the third before sealing the win.
Opening the day's events will be TSTT and Jabloteh in the Championship Division from 12.30 pm.
