Kiron Manswell netted a handful of goals to lead Petit Valley/Diego Martin United to an emphatic 11-1 thumping of St James Spartans in their opening North West District encounter in the RBC West Penn Island-wide Community Youth Under-20 Football Tournament hosted by the West Penn Center for Sports & Culture (West Penn) at St Anthony's College Ground, Westmoorings on Sunday (June 2).
For Petit Valley/Diego Martin, Jarvis Maalik added a hat-trick while Micha'el John got a double, and Joshua Noray the other in the lopsided contest.
In the opening match of a triple-header at Westmoorings, San Juan Jabloteh got a hat-trick from national U-20 winger Andell Fraser in the sixth, 32nd, and 54th minutes while Israel Radellant scored twice (35th, 36th), and Keanu John (10th), and Roshaun Doobay (60th) one each in their 7-0 blow-out of Diego Martin FC.
In the other match, Malick Blue Lions overcame an early setback to edge Miscellaneous Laventille Utd 3-2 with Tyrese Manswell (25th), Antonio Sealey (28th) and Jaqun Phillip (44th) on target for the winners to cancel out a double for Miscellaneous Laventille United from Kersheem Alexander in the fourth, and 41st minutes.
In another one-sided contest, Macoya Ginga won 8-1 over Arima Creek in the Far East District; Evolution FC pounded Harlem Strikers 9-1 in the Central District; City FC spanked Broadway Attackers 5-2 and Ste Madeleine Strikers punished Kamillionare FC both in the South Central District, and in the South West, Guapo Uprising Youths trounced Erin Border Players 6-0.
This year's tournament features 48 teams, an increase of 16 from last year competing across eight designated communities for $32,000 in prize money in addition to medals and trophies with the participating teams being allowed five U-23 players on their roster, but only three featuring on the field at any given time.
The winners of this year’s competition will collect $15,000 while the second-placed team gets $10,000 and the third and fourth, $5,000 and $3,000 respectively with the fifth to eighth-placed teams each receiving $1,000 each.
Malabar Semi-Pro Blasters are the two-time reigning champions after retaining their title in a pulsating final, 4-3 in extra-time over former winners Petit Valley/Diego Martin after a 3-3 regulation-time draw at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex, last July led by a double from Israel Joseph.
In the third-place battle, Maguaya United edged FC Ginga 1-0 while in the semifinals both Semi-Pro Blasters and Petit Valley/Diego Martin won their matches at the same venue by similar 5-1 margins over FC Ginga, and Maguaya United FA, respectively.
