It was more of the same with no athlete meeting the automatic qualifying standard for the upcoming Tokyo Games in Japan at the second Olympic Trials hosted by the National Association of Athletics Administration of T&T (NAAATT), on Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain.
Several saw marked improvement in the times but was still outside of the qualifying benchmark including quartermiler Kirdell Mc Intosh and sprinters Leah Bertrand and Shaniqua Bascombe.
Unattached runner Mc Intosh again topped the men's 400 metres as in the first Trials last Monday with a 48.82-clocking but it was not enough to go under the 44.90-standard. He also finished ahead of Fyzabad's Joshua Mascall, who matched his time of 49.26, and Elijah Joseph (Mounting Eagles), who was slower with 50.12
Bertrand of Simplex completed the women's sprint double winning the 200m with a wind-assisted 23.88 compared to her 24.51 (2.0) in placing second at last Monday's trial but in the 100m, she clocked a slower 11.58 (2.1), compared to her 11.52 (2.0).
Bascombe (Cougars), the reigning “Youth Sportswoman of the Year”, was the second place finisher in the 100m dash with an improved 11.75 (2.1) in comparison to her third-place finish, a week ago with 11.97 (2.0), swapping places with Kamaria Durant (Simplex), who was third in 12.32 (2.1).
The men's 100m also lacked with none of the sprinter coming close to the 10.05-standard. Revell Webster of Concorde, who won section one in the timed fianl was the overall winner with 10.80 (2.8 ) with section two winner Ayodele Taffe (Wildcats) second with 10.87 (-1.8) and Nathan Farinha (Wildcats) third in 10.94 (-1.8).
