Terminix La Horquetta Rangers got a goal on each side of the half to edge Real West Fort United 2-1 in the second match of a double header of the Ascension Football League at the La Horquetta Recreation Ground in La Horquetta on Friday.
Rangers have now created some daylight on second and third-place teams Defence Force and Police FC on the standing with six rounds of matches to go. The win took Rangers to 35 points, eight points in front, with both the Army and Police FC scheduled to play yesterday.
Daniel David opened their account in the 18th minute for the La Horquetta men.
Former national striker Ataullah Guerra showed tremendous strength and control to keep off his marker when a ball was fed to him deep in the area. The lanky forward turned on his man and delivered to the oncoming Daniel David to rifle the ball up into the roof of the net and push his team ahead 1-0.
Rangers, a team that scored 54 goals in 13 games to date and which has dominated the league so far, was later to blame for the equalising item that came six minutes afterwards. Gary Griffith, the former Commissioner of Police was animated in the crowd when his son Gary Griffith III turned skilfully on the left flank before releasing to Brendon Creed who quickly lifted the ball inside the box aimed at Akel La Borde. But defender Jesus Perez accidentally headed the ball into his own net to put the western team on level terms 1-0 before the halftime interval.
With the score tied up at one apiece when the game resumed, Rangers assured themselves the three points during the run of play.
Junior Assoon, the target of a quick break by Kadeem Corbin on the left side, quickly delivered a return pass in the centre of the penalty area for Corbin to drive powerfully past goalkeeper Theon Brown for the 2-1 victory.
In the first game, Central FC thrashed Moruga FC 3-1 to move to nine points on the standings but still, they remained second-from-bottom in the standings. Romario Burke was the architect of his team’s opening goal, intercepting a pass on the right flank in the 36th minute before his searching run into the centre of the park, putting his eyes on the unmarked Keshan St Rose on top of the area.
Burke’s pas to St Rose saw the latter take just one touch before slotting the ball beyond the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper for the advantage.
Jarique Williams added another goal for the central team in the 46th minute and Leonardo Da Costa made it 3-0 in the 72nd. Moruga FC’s lone strike came ironically off Jervelle Turner, the former Moruga goalkeeper who conceded many goals in the first half of the league.
Turner in the 84th minute latched on to a through-ball inside of the area and skilfully eluded the Central FC custodian before turning the ball into an empty net.
