GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Champions Guyana Jaguars needed only an hour to take the remaining four Trinidad and Tobago Red Force wickets and complete a dominant 219-run victory in their third-round match of the Regional Four-Day Championship yesterday.
Veteran left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (4-42) and Test leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo (2-39) shared the wickets to fall as Red Force, resuming the final day at the National Stadium on 122 for six, were dismissed for 183 in their second innings.
The 30-year-old Permaul, who played the last of his six Tests five years ago, finished the match with eight wickets and also brought up 500 career first-class wickets.
The victory was Jaguars’ second of the season following their first-round victory over Leeward Islands Hurricanes, and a perfect comeback in the wake of their drubbing at the hands of Barbados Pride in the last round.
For Red Force, the result marked their first loss of the season following stalemates in the previous two rounds.
Starting the day 281 runs adrift and facing an improbable task of saving the encounter, Red Force lost Akeal Hosein in the morning’s second over before he had added to his overnight five, lbw to impressive rookie seamer Nial Smith.
Kjorn Ottley, unbeaten on 13 at the start, made 22 as he helped inspire a 31-run eighth-wicket stand with last round century-maker Terrance Hinds (22) and provide some resistance.
However, both fell in the space of two balls in separate overs without a run added, to leave Red Force on 155 for nine.
Odean Smith (14) and Bryan Charles (13 not out) then chanced their arms to strike some lusty blows in a 28-run, last-wicket partnership which ended when Permaul had Smith stumped on the stroke of the first hour.
Red Force was let down by poor batting in the contest, bowled out for 98 in their first innings to concede a lead of 225.
