Former West Indies captain Richie Richardson was inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame last Saturday night (October 2) in Boca Raton, USA for his contribution to the sport. The gala event which was the 40th held by the Hall of Fame took place at the palatial Embassy Suites.
The honour was bestowed upon the former captain as well as other prominent West Indians in the form of Butch Stewart (posthumously) and journalist/commentator Vinode Mamchan.
The 59-year-old Sir Richardson who played 86 Test matches for the West Indies scoring 5949 runs could not attend the function and will be presented with his credentials at a later date.
Stewart, who died last year was the owner of the Sandals Resorts International, which is currently the major sponsor of Cricket West Indies. The Jamaican played a huge role in assisting the West Indies team over the years and was considered a great supporter of cricket. Before his passing he made the comment that West Indies cricket and Sandals are two world class brands that the Caribbean can be proud of.
Mamchan has travelled the world covering West Indies cricket and promoting the sport. He has covered numerous World Cups both as a print journalist and commentator and visited several countries including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the entire Caribbean providing listeners and readers with concise and entertaining reporting.
He has also made a huge mark in the United States, becoming a household name among the cricketing family in the developing cricket nation. Mamchan's work with Cricket Council USA (CCUSA) has taken his across the US covering matches.
