The sports of tennis and aquatics which includes swimming and water polo etc, are to get their own technical directors, Hayden Mitchell, a director at the Sports Company of T&T has said.
They will be required to produce programmes that will develop the centres, as well as develop the sports as a whole.
Invitations for the positions, via an ad, went out to the local, regional and international communities recently to fill the positions, but Mitchell who has direct responsibility for facilities at the Sport Company said the government's and SporTT's concern is to get the best persons to take the sports (tennis and aquatics) forward.
"For us, we're looking for the best candidate, so whether it comes internally in Trinidad because there are lots of Trinidadians who are all over the place. There may be people who are down here that we don't know of, or there may be Trinidadians who are outside, who we do not know of. Or, there may be non-nationals who may fill the positions, but for SporTT and the government, we're looking for the best fit for whichever position it is. We're looking for talent, that's what we need," Mitchell explained yesterday in an interview.
Last year Joseph Mc Leod, a vice president of the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T, the parent body for swimming in the country, said his association was in the process of conducting interviews for a technical director who was likely to come from abroad.
Mc Leod noted yesterday that with the borders still closed due to the COVID19 situation, the interviewing process was at a standstill as no one can enter the country, saying: "Remembers it's international applicants we are dealing with."
From the three state-of-the-art sporting facilities built for use- the National Racquet Centre (NRC), the National Cycling Centre (NCC) and the National Aquatic Centre (NAC), only the sport of cycling had a technical director- American Erin Hartwell who left the job last year to pursue other options.
Mitchell said: "It is also in line with the whole government approach to making sure that the 'Nationals', as we call them, which is the aquatic, cycling and tennis, have technical directors. As you recalled, cycling had a technical director in Erin Hartwell, we're now looking for one for aquatics and of course, tennis is looking for one as well."
