Coach of the T&T senior golf team, Chris Richards Snr., says the local players are ready to take on the best golfers in the region at this year’s Caribbean Amateur Senior Golf Championship, which tees off at the Iberostar Golf Course in Bavaro, Dominican Republic, Wednesday.
Richards Snr says after yesterday’s practice on the course, the T&T putters looked smooth and composed as they manoeuvred the 18-hole course. He told Guardian Media that the much-anticipated windy conditions were not as strong as predicted.
T&T senior men are looking to claim gold in the Hoerman Cup competition after finishing second to Puerto Rico in the 2023 edition at the Magdalena Golf Course, Lowlands, Tobago. Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas completed the top five among the nine nations that participated.
T&T skipper Ryan Peters will be hoping to repeat his heroics from last year, when he was named the joint top player of the tournament along with Rhadames Pena of Puerto Rico, both tallying 215.
Jean-Marc Chevortierre (14th-225), Ayden Ali (18th-230), Ryan Gomez (20th-233), Ehtan Hill (25th-234), and Liam Bryden (28th-236) will be looking to improve their 2023 performances over the next three days.
T&T women will be seeking to improve on their fifth place one year ago. Hosts Domincan Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and the US Virgin Islands finished ahead of the Victoria Seenath-captain ladies local quartet.
Chloe Ajodha was 12th (256), with Jada Charles in 15th (291). Cayman Islander Holly McLean was the top lady (217).
Seenath will be the first local in action when play gets underway at 8 a.m. She will tee off at 9:40 a.m., 40 minutes after the start of the ladies division. She will be followed by Elise La Borde (9.50 am), Zoe Correira (10:00 am), and Chloe Ajodha (10.10 am). The T&T ladies are among 24 players from the Cayman Islands, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic.
Fifty-one men will square off at 8 a.m.. Gomez is the first local man on the course (9:50am), with Ali (10am), Bryden (10.10am), Chevrotiere (10.20 am), Peters (10:30 am), and Richards Jnr (10.40 am) up next.
T&T will face Barbados, Turks and Caicos, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the home team of the of the Dominican Republic.
