MANCHESTER, England – West Indies lost their last five wickets for 61 runs to slump to a 113-run defeat to England on the final day of the second Test at Old Trafford on Monday.
A dejected Shai Hope walks off after being bowled for seven in West Indies’ second innings on Monday.
Set an improbable 312 for victory, West Indies were dismissed for 198 in their second innings, despite half-centuries from Shamarh Brooks and Jermaine Blackwood.
They were tottering on 137 for five at tea and even though captain Jason Holder tried to rally with 35, the West Indies innings folded tamely with 14.5 overs left to survive.
Veteran seamer Chris Broad led the attack with three for 42 while fast bowling all-rounders Ben Stokes (2-30) and Chris Woakes (2-34), along with off-spinner Dom Bess (2-59) all finished with two wickets each.
Brooks, unbeaten at tea on 52, top-scored with 62, striking four fours and two sixes off 136 balls in just short of 3-½ hours but was second out after the interval, trapped lbw on the crease by left-arm seamer Sam Curran.
Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich completed a pair in the match when he also fell lbw to Woakes in the first over after tea, and Holder mixed defence and attack in striking five fours and a six off 62 balls before being bowled through the gate by Bess.
Blackwood had earlier struck an attractive 55, sharing a 100-run stand for the fifth wicket with Brooks, to pull West Indies out of trouble from their lunch time position of 25 for three.
However, Blackwood perished in the final over before tea, fending a short ball from Stokes to be caught by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler running around to the leg side.
The three-match series is tied 1-1 after West Indies won the first Test last week by four wickets.
Old Trafford will host the final Test starting Friday.
