T&T’s Gabriella Wood, this country’s lone judo hopeful for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has arrived in Budapest ahead of competing in the 2021 Judo World Championships.
The seven-day championship which began on Sunday will conclude this Sunday at the Laszlo Papp Budapest Sports Arena and features competition in eight categories for men and women.
The men are competing in the 60kg, 66kg, 73kg, 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg while the women are battling in the 48kg, 52kg, 57kg, 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and +78kg while there is also a mixed team division.
This year's competition has a large field of 40 athletes competing in the +78kg division.
This means that there will be five knock-out rounds of competition before a winner is declared.
The 23-year-old Wood has been seeded to begin competing in the second round of Group A on 12th June 2021.
She will go up against the winner of the first-round match between Adiyasuren Amarsaikhan (Mongolia) and Anzhela Gasparian (Russian Judo Federation). Should she win that match, she would go on to compete against World and Olympic Champion Idalys Ortiz of Cuba for a place in the quarterfinals.
