Just when the St. Lucia Zouks coffin was about to be lowered in the hole on Sunday, they jumped out and ran away singing the victory song.
Another amazing comeback to follow the TKR's effort on Saturday has landed the Zouks their fifth win in seven matches and they are almost assured of a place in the semi-finals of the 2020 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) tournament.
They set the defending champions the Barbados Tridents just 93 runs to win from 20 over or 120 balls and somehow they just couldn't get that small score losing by three runs.
SCORES: St. Lucia Zouks 92 all out (18) versus Barbados Tridents 89/7 Tridents lost by three runs. Only twice that a team has chased 93 or fewer runs and batted 20 overs and didn't get it.
After the baptism of fire that leg-spinner Hayden Walsh got on Saturday from Keiron Pollard, who took 24 runs of one of his overs, he looked the heavens a lot more pleased yesterday as he was back his old self, getting people out. His 3/19 broke the back of the Zouks batting and saw them crumble to 92 all out.
The Tridents then made heavy weather of getting the target using all 20 overs, losing seven wickets and still falling short.
It went down to the final over with the Tridents needing nine runs for victory and the player from Christchurch in Barbados Roston Chase, who was given the task to deny the Zouks. His first ball was a dot ball, he grabbed a wicket with the next and this was followed by another dot ball. With three balls to go, they needed nine runs still and Chase allowed only five, sparking wild celebrations from the inspirational skipper Darren Sammy.
Johnson Charles who normally gets his work done quickly scored 39 off 42 balls, one of his slower offerings in T20 cricket. Shai Hope scored 14 off 11 balls and Corey Anderson continued his Caribbean nightmare with 11 off 20 balls.
Earlier, the Zouks players could not blame the pitch as they just played wrong shots to certain balls and got dismissed. The Barbados bowling attack was as disciplined as the policemen on Broad Street directing traffic. Their hands stayed in their pockets as they gave nothing away.
There were no freebies for the Zouks and one wonders whether if this match was played in South and they had to pass Freeport if they would have turned back.
Apart from Walsh, Raymond Reifer took 2/5 off his solitary over, as only three Zouks batsmen got into double figures. Afghanistan's Najibullah Zadran who has caught the eye at this CPL made 22, while Emerging Player Leniko Boucher scored 18 and Roston Chase 14.
SCORES: St. Lucia Zouks 92 all out (18) (Najibullah Zadran 22, Leniko Boucher 18, Roston Chase 14, Hayden Walsh 3/19, Raymond Reifer 2/5) vs Barbados Tridents 89/7 (20) (Johnson Charles 39, Leniko Boucher 18, Javal Glenn 2/11, Kesrick Williams 2/12) - Zouks won by 3 runs.
