Most of us are familiar with the timeless comic characters the likes of Archie and the wily Calvin and Hobbes and Dennis the Menace. But when it comes to those that represent our culture, how much do we know about them? The organisers of Comicfest, T&T's only comic-book exposition, want to know. Beginning tomorrow, local comic-book creators-Chris Riley, Shaun Riaz Mohammed and Rangie Persad-will be displaying their work at Comicfest at Trincity Mall. Comicfest said in a release that Riley and his brother, Wendell, have broken new ground by launching a comic-book Web site dedicated entirely to comics created by locals. The Web site, www.threequatercomics.com, is the only site with access to free local comics.
The Rileys have also created a new title that is very unlike their previous works,The Midnight Robber and Monster City. Their newest title-Mango Chil'ren-focuses on the good old days of growing up in the country, with some moral values thrown in for good measure. Mohammed and Persad's newest release-City under the Sky-is a dark journey into the weird and supernatural. The trio will be joined by Terry Suresh Mootilal on May 5 for a second exhibition at The Better Value Plaza, Gulf View in La Romaine. Mootilal is a longtime comic creator, writing and drawing the comic Wolfscream. The exhibitions are free to the public.
