Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter Jack Warn­er in­tends to use the $5.5 bil­lion al­lo­cat­ed to his min­istry in the 2012/2013 na­tion­al bud­get on Mon­day to re­in­force the equip­ment that mem­bers of the pro­tec­tive ser­vices use to in­ten­si­fy the fight against crime.

Warn­er was ad­dress­ing a crowd that had gath­ered to voice their con­cerns about im­prov­ing the area yes­ter­day at the bas­ket­ball court in Trou Macaque.

Last De­cem­ber, four peo­ple were killed in a fire in the hous­ing de­vel­op­ment in the area. He promised new po­lice sta­tions and even said that there would be more he­li­copters do­ing sur­veil­lance work around the coun­try. Warn­er al­so said that he heard a mur­der had been com­mit­ted in Beetham Gar­dens ear­li­er yes­ter­day and begged the peo­ple to not tol­er­ate vi­o­lence in the area. It has been 23 days with­out a mur­der in the Laven­tille area.

"Tell them don't bring back that non­sense here," he shout­ed. An­oth­er ini­tia­tive that his min­istry would be im­ple­ment­ing was go­ing in­to any area con­sid­ered a "hot spot" to have con­sul­ta­tions on how the peo­ple and the po­lice could work to­geth­er. Warn­er promised that no gangs would suc­ceed in break­ing the law of the coun­try. He said that even the Leader of the Op­po­si­tion had re­ceived a death threat which the po­lice were in­ves­ti­gat­ing.

He urged the peo­ple not to leave the area but to stay and help re­build their com­mu­ni­ties. Al­so present at the meet­ing was At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Anand Ram­lo­gan who said the main du­ty of the po­lice was to pro­tect the peo­ple and the laws of T&T. He shared a sto­ry about his youth of be­ing the on­ly one in his fam­i­ly to grad­u­ate from sec­ondary school.

Ram­lo­gan said he was us­ing the sto­ry to show the peo­ple that any­thing was pos­si­ble even if you come from hum­ble be­gin­nings. He said that the chil­dren of the na­tion must be en­cour­aged to suc­ceed no mat­ter what and it must be the rea­son why vi­o­lence and crime must stop.
