Trinidad and Tobago has become the first country in the region to develop its own internationally recognised postal code system, says Public Utilities Minister Emmanuel George. George made the disclosure while delivering the feature address during yesterday's launch of the postal code system at the Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain.
The postal or zip code will be used in addressing mail. George said when the system was implemented, every household or business location would receive its own unique address. He said at present people did their own thing when it came to addresses, but the new code would result in less confusion.
"This new system will result in improved mail delivery (and) efficient location of addresses and will facilitate e-commerce and Internet shopping," George said. Delivering remarks at the launch, chairman of Postal Corporation (TTPost) Anthony Moore said a postal code was a unique identifier that aids in the identification of an addressee's location.
"This unique identifier will soon be incorporated in all local addresses and will assist the corporation in the more efficient transmission, sorting and delivery of mail," said Moore.
