Trinidad and To­ba­go has be­come the first coun­try in the re­gion to de­vel­op its own in­ter­na­tion­al­ly recog­nised postal code sys­tem, says Pub­lic Util­i­ties Min­is­ter Em­manuel George. George made the dis­clo­sure while de­liv­er­ing the fea­ture ad­dress dur­ing yes­ter­day's launch of the postal code sys­tem at the Hy­att Re­gency, Port-of-Spain.

The postal or zip code will be used in ad­dress­ing mail. George said when the sys­tem was im­ple­ment­ed, every house­hold or busi­ness lo­ca­tion would re­ceive its own unique ad­dress. He said at present peo­ple did their own thing when it came to ad­dress­es, but the new code would re­sult in less con­fu­sion.

"This new sys­tem will re­sult in im­proved mail de­liv­ery (and) ef­fi­cient lo­ca­tion of ad­dress­es and will fa­cil­i­tate e-com­merce and In­ter­net shop­ping," George said. De­liv­er­ing re­marks at the launch, chair­man of Postal Cor­po­ra­tion (TTPost) An­tho­ny Moore said a postal code was a unique iden­ti­fi­er that aids in the iden­ti­fi­ca­tion of an ad­dressee's lo­ca­tion.

"This unique iden­ti­fi­er will soon be in­cor­po­rat­ed in all lo­cal ad­dress­es and will as­sist the cor­po­ra­tion in the more ef­fi­cient trans­mis­sion, sort­ing and de­liv­ery of mail," said Moore.
