The world stands in collective concern regarding the outcome of tomorrow’s US Presidential elections. The polls are not merely between two individuals, their parties and support bases, but given the power and reach of the United States in economic, military and political matters, the implications of the outcome have serious potential and real impacts on the world.
Over the decades, American foreign policy to the world, whichever party is in office, varies only marginally and much of that is likely to be the same in this instance. However, regarding the possibility in this election of a president being a woman of mixed black and Indian origins coming to power, while the other candidate has not hidden his avowed agenda to take revenge on enemies he continues to insist “stole” the 2020 election from him, there is the potential for an explosion of a kind that can threaten the stability of the American society, with extensions to the rest of the world.
In the instance of Democratic Party candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, it will be historic if a woman is elected president of the leading, male-dominated country in the Western hemisphere. By way of policies and programmes, the Harris campaign has said little that is new in relation to that which is typical of Democrats: strong on protection and advancement of the middle and lower classes, with taxation measures to force the very wealthy in society, the multi-millionaires, billionaires and the corporate sector to pay what is considered “their fair share” to the national treasury.
The party has also targeted women’s healthcare, with the intention to roll back legislation which effectively makes abortion under any circumstances, and for any cause, extremely difficult if not impossible to achieve.
On the other side, the Trump Republican campaign has been strong on clamping down on migrants penetrating its southern border and ending what has been labelled the advantage that has allowed exporters to penetrate and destroy the American economy.
“We shall Make America Great Again and respected around the world,” has been one of Trump’s major campaigning positions.
But above and beyond whatever he has said about the economy, Trump’s campaign has been oriented on taking revenge for his claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him by the Democrats, and this notwithstanding the dozens of court decisions to the contrary.
Reports have indicated quite an amount of alleged gerrymandering of the vote against Democrats, especially blacks and coloureds in certain states. Trump’s very overt support for dictators in countries such as Russia, North Korea and Hungary, along with his promise to be rough on traditional American allies in Europe, has also caused some concern in the US media.
The several opinion polls also differ only slightly in their findings, showing the candidates locked in a dead heat. Over 50 million electors have already cast their votes while allegations continue about election fraud. Trump and his supporters have clearly indicated that defeat will be considered a steal which will not be tolerated, with a promise of retaliation. The world collectively holds its breath.
