The Ministry of Education will seek the opinion of the Attorney General concerning the pending decision on whether to publish the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) results this year.
Education Minister Anthony Garcia confirmed that no decision had been made following a Strategic Executive Meeting at Education Tower on Tuesday, where the matter was discussed.
“We got an opinion from our legal officer. That opinion was discussed and it was decided that we would refer that opinion to the Attorney General before we make our next move,” said Garcia at the Success Laventille Secondary School on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Sanathan Dharma Maha Sabha sent a pre-action protocol letter warning the Ministry against stopping the publication of the results. However, Garcia said he was yet to receive any such letter.
He said while the group was free to use legal options, he pointed out such action was premature.
“I suppose it is the right of Mr (Sat) Maharaj to pursue this matter through legal channels, however, I find it is interesting because we have not taken any decision as yet either to publish or not to publish,” said Garcia, who also pointed out that the SDMS Secretary-General had been a part of a recent meeting held on the issue.
“We have been liaising with our stakeholders, we have been talking to many persons, and in fact only last week we met with a delegation from the association of denominational boards and we discussed this same issue.
“Mr Sat Maharaj was present among about 13 other representatives from denominational boards. Mr Maharaj put forward his view and so others also put forward their views,” said the Education Minister, who said it was likely after receiving the Attorney General’s input, they may be closer to a decision.
