A Sangre Grande magistrate has allowed two police officers accused of sex offences against a 16-year-old girl to continue on station bail until their next court appearance.
Inspector Christopher Fuentes, 55 and Cpl Dindial Joseph, 45, were both charged with sexual offences against the teenager following instructions from the Director of Public Prosecution Roger Gaspard on Wednesday night. Both officers were granted police station bail by a Justice of the Peace at Sangre Grande Police Station that same night.
Fuentes, who was last attached to Arouca Homicide Bureau, Region II, who was charged with three counts of sexual penetration, abduction of a child and false imprisonment, was granted $500,000 bail.
Joseph, who was last stationed at Northern Division, was charged with sexual touching and was granted $80,000 bail.
Both police officers appeared before Magistrate Brambhanan Dubay in the Sangre Grande First Magistrate Court on Thursday.
Both men were not called upon to plead as the charges were laid indictably.
Fuentes was represented by attorney Ian Brooks and Joseph by Jerry Holder.
Dubay did not make any changes to their station bail there were granted. The matter was adjourned to September 11.
According to police reports, three suspects were arrested following a lime at a police officer's Sangre Grande home, after the homeowner reported that his gun and other important documents missing.
An intensive investigation by Insp Juri, head of CID Sangre Grande, led to the arrest of a 16-year-old female suspect and a 30-year-old male suspect. The gun was recovered but not the police ID card.
However, the 16-year-old complained to investigating officers that she was sexually assaulted. The matter was handed over to Sangre Grande Child Protection Unit, where Insp Baptiste, PC Locket and other officers continued the investigation and submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecution. Chares were laid against two suspects while one walked free at the end of the investigation.
