On the heels of Sunday’s drive-by shooting where two people were killed and six others wounded and another woman killed early Monday, community activist Cedric “Burkie” Burke insists that residents of Sea Lots are under attack, adding that they are “peaceful people.”
Burke made the comment during CNC3’s Morning Brew yesterday, hours after police locked down the community on Monday night to ensure there was no further violence.
Minutes after the deadly shooting, it was said that there was a hit on Burke’s life. However, he said he believes otherwise as he escaped unhurt.
Burke and several residents were playing a game of poker at Pioneer Drive, just off the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Sunday, when two vehicles pulled up shortly after 8 pm and its occupants opened fire on them.
Rawlye Williams, 37, died on the spot while calypsonian Patrick “Revealer” Lewis died of his injuries at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Six others, Jamal Leid, 24; Nigel Roberts, 30; Shenelle Johnson, 24; Trey Baird, 22; Trevor Isaac, 56 and Rahim Bruce, 23, were also hit.
During yesterday’s interview, Burke said one of Sunday’s victims remains warded in the Intensive Care Unit at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
Asked how he felt knowing that he was the target of the shooting, Burke said he has nothing to fear and will go about his daily routine as normal, “I have never and never will be. The people are cool and will go about their lives as normal. Sea Lots don’t have any violence, we don’t create any kind of violence.”
Subsequent to Sunday’s drive-by, a gunman knocked on the front door of the home of Tracy Julius Rogers, 31, less than 12 hours later. When she opened the door she was shot dead. It is believed that her shooter came in via a pirogue, according to one resident who spoke to Guardian Media under strict anonymity.
“There is only one way in and one way out on this side and it had to be that the shooter come in here with a boat because the waterfront right there,” the resident said.
On Monday at about 4 pm, fire broke out in a wooden and galvanise structure off Production Drive where a woman only identified as Lisa was staying. She was found dead among the rubble.
Yesterday at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, relatives of the woman refused to speak to members of the media and also refused to confirm her name.
Investigations are continuing.
