Police are set to charge a 35-year-old man for the murder of Police Constable Krishna Banahar. Homicide investigators received instructions from Deputy Director of Public Prosecution Sabrina Jaglal to charge the suspect with Banahar’s murder, possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition.
The suspect, from Rose Street, Gonzales Village, Guapo, was arrested hours after 25-year-old Banahar was killed on November 6. Banahar had five years of service and was attached to the Siparia CID. Banahar and other officers from the South Western Division were conducting an anti-crime exercise and executing a search warrant for arms and ammunition at a house near the shooting. Banahar and the suspect’s relative, Hakim Joseph, were fighting when the suspect shot the officer.
Banahar’s colleagues returned fire. During the shooting Joseph was also shot. Banahar received a military funeral on November 9, attended by National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher, and officers from the First and Second Divisions of the TTPS. The service took place at Banahar’s Fyzabad home, and the cremation occurred at the Shore of Peace at Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche.
When charged, the suspect will appear before a High Court Master. The investigation was supervised by Supt. Persad and Sgt. Bridgemohan of the Homicide Bureau Region 3. ASP Maharaj is the lead investigator.
