Police are yet to detain any suspects in connection with three mass shootings at Harpe Place, Cocorite and Gonzales, which claimed a total of 13 lives altogether.
A senior official of the Homicide Bureau yesterday assured that despite this, “Enquiries were ongoing in all of the matters.”
So far, police have stepped up patrols in some of the areas where the multiple murders occurred.
In the first mass shooting at Harpe Place, Observatory Street, Port-of-Spain on March 16 – five people were killed when gunmen drove onto the compound of the housing complex around 10 am and began shooting at the crowd in the open courtyard.
Devon Jack, 42; Pete Noray, 49; Rudolph James, 53; Randy Graves, 32; and Sgt Larry Phillip, 51 – lost their lives in that incident.
Residents at the Housing Development Corporation’s (HDC) scheme have continued to lobby for four security gates at the site.
Only last week, Housing Minister Camille Robinson-Regis promised the gates would be installed within the next two months.
In the second mass shooting at Powder Magazine, Phase 1, Cocorite, on May 4 – four people were shot dead after gunmen drove onto the compound of the apartment complex and in a similar fashion to the Harpe Place shooting, opened fire on the crowd of residents in the vicinity of the burger-cart where they were playing cards and liming.
Shaquille Ottley, 22; Sadiki Ottley, 31; Jonathan Osmond, 36; and Antonio Jack, 57 were killed in that incident.
A senior officer from the Western Division yesterday assured that mobile and foot patrols were continuing daily in the community.
He said law enforcement efforts to maintain a visible presence in the area had been fruitful.
But he was wary, “It appears the area is not as volatile as before but we are conscious that in a moment’s notice, this could elevate into something violent and volatile.”
He added, “We keep hearing murmurings and whispers on the ground as it pertains to reprisals but there is no evidence other than talk on the ground.”
Meanwhile, the third mass shooting at Gonzales, Belmont on June 2, claimed the lives of four men minutes after a football friendly ended.
Jayden Reyes, 21; Peter Williams, 31; Kevin King, 33; and Johnathon Arjoon, 23 – were killed in the incident that saw the medical fraternity also facing fire as gunmen followed the victims to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they targeted the survivors.
