A 35-year-old man is expected to appear before a High Court Master today charged with the murder of Police Constable Krishna Banahar.
Homicide investigators received instructions from Deputy Director of Public Prosecution Sabrina Jaglal to charge him with murder, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
The suspect of St Rose Street, Gonzales Village, Guapo, was arrested hours after 25-year-old Banahar was killed in a shooting incident on November 6. Banahar was among other officers of the South Western Division on an anti-crime exercise.
They went to St Rose Street to execute a search warrant for arms and ammunition at a house. Banahar and the suspect’s relative Hakim Joseph were fighting when the suspect shot the officer. Banahar’s colleagues returned fire, discharging four rounds of ammunition. Joseph was shot and killed.
Banahar had five years of service and was attached to the Siparia CID. He was given a military funeral which was attended by hundreds of people on November 9, including National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher and First and Second Division officers of the TTPS.
The service was held at Banahar’s Fyzabad home while the cremation was done at the Shore of Peace at Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche. The investigation was supervised by Supt Persad and Sgt Bridgemohan of the Homicide Bureau Region 3. The investigator is ASP Maharaj.
