St Au­gus­tine MP Khadi­jah Ameen says the Gov­ern­ment should have sim­ply giv­en the Min­istry of Works and Trans­port $200mil­lion for road re­pair in­stead of cre­at­ing the Sec­ondary Road Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion and Im­prove­ment Com­pa­ny Lim­it­ed. Her com­ments come af­ter the Prime Min­is­ter moved the com­pa­ny from un­der the purview of the Min­istry of Rur­al De­vel­op­ment and Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment, to the Min­istry of Works and Trans­port.

Ameen said the cre­ation of a spe­cial pur­pose com­pa­ny was al­ways go­ing to raise eye­brows.

"Many feel that some­thing is def­i­nite­ly wrong as a next [sic] spe­cial pur­pose com­pa­ny is now be­ing used as a tool for cor­rup­tion as it is com­mon opin­ion that the Sec­ondary Road Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion and Im­prove­ment Com­pa­ny Lim­it­ed was just a big pro­pa­gan­da stunt," Ameen said in a re­lease.

She said she ex­pects Min­is­ter Al Rawi to de­liv­er on his promise of spend­ing $400 mil­lion on road re­pairs.
