Police have charged Canadian YouTuber Chris Must List with sedition, a day after he was taken into custody by officers of the Special Investigation Unit in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
The YouTuber, whose real name is Christopher Arthur Hughes, had been in T&T filming videos with men carrying weapons in areas of T&T known for gangs and criminal activity.
His videos were posted on his Youtube channel, 'Chris Must List'.
The charge reads: "On Thursday 9th May 2024 in the Magisterial District of North Trinidad, (you) published a seditious publication to wit: an audio/visual video via YouTube the social media platforms contrary to section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act Chapter 11:04."
The charge is dated May 29th, 2024.
The section of the Sedition Act under which he is charged reads, "A person is guilty of an offence who publishes, sells, offers for sale or distributes any seditious publication."
On summary conviction, it carries a penalty of a fine of TT$3,000 and to imprisonment for two years; or on conviction on indictment to a fine of TT$20,000 and to imprisonment for five years, and any seditious publication, the subject matter of the charge, shall be forfeited.
