Ann Noel, wife of former world champion boxer Claude Noel who appeared to have been abused at his home in Malabar, Arima during the period of last year to this year, has said she will take legal action against the person or persons who are caught guilty of abusing her husband.
The matter has now become the subject of a police investigation and public concern. Ann said she will await the completion of the investigation before proceeding with legal actions if there is a need too.
Guardian Media Sports learnt that officers visited Noel’s home on Sunday morning and questioned his nephew Renny Noel and the government-employed caretaker Maria John.
The junior Noel said Maria admitted to have been the one to take the video, however, it was taken because of an agreement between her and Ann Noel to highlight the rants of the ex-boxer occasionally.
Ann told Guardian Media Sports her husband began engaging in rants which became annoying to the caretaker and it was agreed that videos of his rants would be sent by Maria.
Ann said she believes the video was taken for that purpose sometime last year, but it may have been sent to someone else in error, as she never saw the video until it started being circulated on Sunday.
She said Tuesday that Maria, who has fallen ill since the video began circulating, is expected to reveal who she sent the video to, and who possibly would have released it into the public domain. She noted also that though there was evil in the intent by sending the video out, she hopes it will be a message to the government to treat her husband properly.
Noel enjoyed an illustrious career in the Lightweight division that spanned from 1973 to 1984 and culminated with the World Boxing Association (WBA) Title against Mexican Rodolfo Gonzalez.
The result of the fight showed a total dominance by Noel with the scores reading 145-140, 145-141 and 144-141, all in favour of Noel.
For his achievement government named the highway in Tobago after him- called the Claude Noel Highway.
However he fell on difficult times during his retirement and lost vision in one eye from glaucoma. Sight in his other eye, his wife said, went soon after when doctors mistakenly cut the retina during surgery.
Ann said her husband was never given proper treatment at the local hospitals.
She also accused government of shabby treatment, saying, although her husband was given the Achievers Grant of $2, 500 monthly for persons making significant contributions to the development of the country, her husband went through hell to receive payments.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services said the ex-boxer received the Achievers Grant and a pension. They noted that there was a time where Noel did not collect his payments, prompting them to contact Renny to collect on his behalf.
Ann said however, her husband was turned away from payments on many occasions when he showed up for cheques.
