T&T's Derron Douglas captured the Open Gender Junior (Under-21) title at the recent My Smart Toilet Seat Table Tennis Tournament held in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday (October 28).
In the championship match, Douglas of Queen's Park Table Tennis Club got the better of clubmate Imani Edwards-Taylor.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, Douglas outplayed Leah Cumberbatch 11-4, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 and then battled past Deandre Calderon 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9, 10-12, 12-10 in their semifinal meeting while Edwards-Taylor topped Caleb Howard 11-7, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10, 11-4 in the last eight and Lamont Gregg 11-7, 8-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-2 in their semifinal.
When the group stage took place, Douglas won Group Three by beating Howard and Terence Ashton while Edwards-Taylor defeated Loukhya Premraj and Leah Cumberbatch in Group Two.
In the Open Gender Senior Knockout competition, both Douglas and Edwards-Taylor were ousted at the semifinal stage.
Douglas was beaten in his semifinal by St Lucian Calderon 5-11, 11-6, 10-12, 6-11, 3-11 while fellow T&T player Edwards-Taylor also fell in the final four against Barbadian Trevor Farley 6-11, 8-11, 6-11, 2-11.
When the round-of-16 served off, Douglas swept past Luc Velox 11-5, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7 followed by Barbadian Kevin Farley 7-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6 11-2, 6-11, 11-16 while Edwards-Taylor defeated Barbadians Keon Alleyne 11-5, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7 and Mark Dowell 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 15-13, 11-7.
The other T&T player to reach the main draw last-16, Selwyn Sinnette was stopped by Calderon 4-11, 3-11, 5-11, 5-11 in his opening match.
In the round-robin group stage, Douglas topped Group Three with 3-0 victories over Lamont Gregg and Grenada's Amanda John while Edwards-Taylor won Group Four with wins against Mikael Hazelwood and Terence Ashton and Sinnette was second in Group Eight after losing to Dowell, but victorious against Juwan Howard.
