Dynamic shooting duo, Jocelyn Marcelle and Debra Beckles were again on the ball for Holiday Snacks in the Alternative Division Y of the Courts All Sectors Netball League on Tuesday night at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua. Marcelle, the goal-shooter, was her consistent self, besting all shooters with 19 goals off 26 tries while goal-attack Beckles was not too far behind with 13 from 25, as Holiday Snacks blew away previously unbeaten TSTT 32-25 to remain the only undefeated team in the group.
An even (7-7) start to the eventual decider saw Holiday Snacks outscore TSTT 8-3 in the second period to lead by five (15-10) at the half. Holiday Snacks kept that rhythm into the next session and held a 24-16 advantage to start the final quarter. TSTT's shooters, Sophia Harper and Janelle Wilsoncombined well offensively as they attempted a comeback in the final 10 minutes, out-shooting their opponents 11-8 but the "telephone girls" still fell short by seven goals.
In the opening match of the night, Defence Force finally got things right as it sealed it first win, whipping the University of Southern Caribbean (USC), 41-17. Donna Chase, who was introduced into the circle in her team's previous match on Saturday against Cavaliers which they lost 50-27, connected with 29 shots off 42 attempts as the goal-attack. Ayanna Mack filled the goal-shooter position, hitting 12 from 26 to keep Defence Force ahead throughout the entire match, leading 8-5, 19-7 and 30-10.
USC's debut in the league, which is in its 20th year of existence, has been disappointing so far, as it has failed to record a victory in its five matches. Three shooters were used Selene Arthur (5/13), Bronella Cornwall (4/9) and Gabriella Gooding (8/15) but the trio was ineffective. Tonight, it will be Fast Net action as teams in the Y division meet in the inaugural competition from 5.30 pm. The league takes a break for the Carnival celebrations, restarting on February 18 with the Fast Net contest in the Alternative Division X.
