Un­beat­en T&T sits on top of the sev­en-team ta­ble af­ter two rounds of match­es in the Crick­et West In­dies (CWI) Women’s Un­der-19 Ris­ing Stars T20 Cham­pi­onship.

The host team, skip­pered by all­rounder Shali­ni Sama­roo, pulled off com­fort­able wins against Bar­ba­dos and Lee­ward Is­lands, to earn eight points, the same as Guyana (3.304) and USA (1.633) but with a bet­ter net run rate of 4.032.

On Wednes­day at the Bri­an Lara Crick­et Acad­e­my (BLCA) in Tarou­ba, San Fer­nan­do, all­rounder Djen­a­ba Joseph notched T&T’s third half-cen­tu­ry of the youth tour­na­ment, 56 not out off 33 balls to de­feat the Bar­ba­di­ans by sev­en wick­ets.

Af­ter the match, Joseph said: “Ob­vi­ous­ly, this is an amaz­ing feel­ing. This is on­ly my sec­ond time over 50 and it’s a great achieve­ment for me. It’s al­ways a good feel­ing to con­tribute to the team and bring the team to vic­to­ry so I am grate­ful for that.”

This fol­lowed, Sama­roo (63) and open­er Shuntelle Sawh’s half-cen­turies (53 not out) against the Lee­ward Is­lands, the day be­fore. T&T post­ed 164-2 from their 20 overs and in re­ply, the Lee­wards were all out for 26 in 12.1 overs. Cap­tain Sama­roo had im­pres­sive bowl­ing fig­ures of four wick­ets for no runs.

“It was a great op­por­tu­ni­ty for all,” said Sama­roo fol­low­ing T&T’s sec­ond win. “A lot of hard work was put in­to this game to­day (Tues­day). Bat­ting first, our tar­get was to al­low 120-130 and ob­vi­ous­ly, we over­came that. When we went out there to field our tar­get was to bowl them out at the least amount pos­si­ble.”

The clos­est chal­lenger, Guyana, has wins against the Lee­ward Is­lands (by ten wick­ets) and Bar­ba­dos (by nine wick­ets) while vis­it­ing team USA al­so sealed easy vic­to­ries against Ja­maica (by sev­en wick­ets) and the Wind­ward Is­lands (by eight wick­ets).

Fri­day’s ac­tion re­sumes af­ter yes­ter­day’s rest day with three match­es. Lee­ward Is­lands face Wind­ward Is­lands at Diego Mar­tin Sport­ing Com­plex at 9.30 am and at BLCA, Bar­ba­dos takes on USA at 10 am; and Ja­maica plays Guyana from 2.30 pm.

On Sat­ur­day, T&T takes on win­less Ja­maica at the Diego Mar­tin Sport­ing Com­plex from 9.30 am.
