Maharaj returns with a vengeance

Maniram "Boboy" Maharaj has been having the quietest time of his training career but last Saturday, the former champion trainer returned to form to win two of the eight races at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.

The largest, single stakeholder in racing had a welcome return to the winner's enclosure, a place he did not frequent for the season. Over the years, Maharaj would always be in the firing line for the trainers title but this year was his worst start in his 50 years of saddling horses in the Sport of Kings.

However, Maharaj came back to form on Saturday, when he saddled a double with My Babes and Champagne On Deck. Clearly, the shrewd owner-trainer, who holds the distinction of breeding, owning and traing a Derby Winner is back and the rest of the 2009 season could see Maharaj returning to the winner's enclosure frequently.

Training honours for the day fell to Chadee who saddled three winners, one more than Maniram Maharaj, who came to form with a vengeance, saddling a double through My Babes and Champagne On Deck. No jockey was able to land two winners on the day's eight-race card.
