Emerald Commander to rule in the Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs at Newbury today. Last week, Richard Hannon's charge made an encouraging debut when fourth to Elusive Pimpernel in a similar race down the Newmarket July course. Emerald Commander dwelt somewhat and did well to achieve his final placing under champion jockey, Ryan Moore, who rides again.
Although nine days may seem a little soon, Hannon often uses the 'first-up' run as an education. So many have improved considerably next time out and if that's the case with this Pivotal colt, we're in business. The time-handicap mark was half-decent and this particular course is renowned for good two-year-old bets, especially in the latter half of a season. Eight decs for the listed, 30,000 Rose Bowl Stakes over six furlongs. If they all run, Walkingonthemoon represents an outstanding each-way special.
Tom Dascombe has emerged as a real force in juvenile races and Walkinginthemoon has been successfully campaigned. No cert by any means but you'll be hard-pressed to find one to beat him, judged on the TH. Another progressive two-year-old is twice-raced Gunner Lindley, fancied to go one better in the Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs at Haydock. Gunner Lindley improved at least 10lbs a fortnight ago, over a furlong less at the Lancashire venue. A real favourite for Barry Hills down the years and you can rest assured, this Medicean colt is expected. Some real crackers will be unleashed from Farringdon during the next few weeks; exciting 'times' ahead, eh?
