Pan American Track Championships gold medallist Christopher Sellier missed out on breaking the existing track record of one minute, 07.2 seconds when the National Cycling Championship Senior Kilo Time Trial event was held at the Arima Velodrome on Thursday night. A gold medal winner at the Pan American Championship two weeks ago in Mexico, Sellier crossed the line in one minute, 07.4 seconds just ahead of national team-mate Adam Alexander (1.10.58).
Sellier went into the event as firm favourite after setting a new Pan American mark (1:00.9) in Mexico two weeks ago. However, in the Juniors, Quincy Alexander went one better than Sellier as he establised a new national mark of one minute, 1:10.3. Alexander's time was faster than Sellier's previous record of 1:10.5 establised in 2004 at the National Championship held at the same. Varun Maraj was second in the event in 1.13.4.
The women's pair of Denise Francis and Jodi Goodridge created a bit of history as they both went under the Junior Pan American Championship qualifying time of 42 seconds to book tickets to Mexico next month. In the 500-metre event, Francis won in 41.30 followed by Goodridge in 41.41. The Championships will continue today at the same venue from 6pm with the Flying 200-metre and Match Sprint rides. It will be second race day of six. The tournament concludes on June 6.
