The month of Ramadan is regarded as both a blessed month and a month of blessings. Since Muslims believe that any good actions during this month will bring them greater reward than similar efforts during the rest of the year, they determinedly increase their efforts towards "striving in His name and for His pleasure." In addition to the compulsory fast and the rules that govern its proper engagement, a special prayer is added to the five compulsory daily prayers during Ramadan.
The Tarawih prayer is offered immediately after the 'Isha namaz (fifth daily prayer), and like the Jum'uah on Fridays, is congregational. Tarawih prayers are held in the mosques every night during the month of Ramadan, and most Jamaats (congregations) endeavour to complete the recitation of the entire Qur'an. Entire sections (Juz' ie 1/30 of the Qur'an) are recited during Tarawih, so that by the end of the month, the entire Qur'an would have been completed.
Others opt to Khatm the Qur'an (read the entire Qur'an) on their own, while others try to offer the Tahajjud prayer–a voluntary prayer offered in the third portion of the night when the believer has slept for awhile and is now awake. The last ten days of Ramadan during which Muslims seek Lailatul Qadr (the Night of Power and first revelation of the Holy Qur'an) are also used as an instrument for increased spirituality. During this period of Al-I'etikaaf (retreat), the Believer removes himself from worldly affairs and retires to the Mosque, where he spends his time in prayer, Zikr (Remembrance of Allah, SWT), reading and recitation of the Qur'an, study of the Hadith or other holy books, or in silent contemplation.
It is believed that the night of Lailatul Qadr falls on one of the odd nights in the last ten days of Ramadan viz. 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th, although the 27th night is the one that is generally accepted. Other activities during Ramadan include feeding the poor and needy, while those who are unable to fast are not deprived of the blessings as they can feed one needy person every day during the month. Visiting the sick and relatives whom one does not normally see, are also activities that those who fast engage in during this blessed month.
