This country's Under-20 Soca Warriors suffered its first loss in Group A at the 25th Concacaf Under-20 Championship when they went under to Guatemala 2-0 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica yesterday.
Starting the day in second spot with four points from a 2-2 draw with Jamaica and a 5-1 thumping of Aruba, the same as Guatemala, the Derek King-coached Under-20 T&T squad went behind for the first time in the tournament in the 25th minute when a header from Guatemalan Mauro Portillo went in past goalkeeper Johan Welch off defender Martieon Watson.
Despite the introduction of Jabari Mitchell (58th), Akeem Humphrey (58th) and Levi Garcia (69th) for the trio of Duane Muckette, Kevin Goddard and Akeem Garcia, T&T failed to get back into the contest and it was Portillo, who added a second for his team with two minutes left in the match to seal all three points.
With the loss, T&T slipped to third on the table behind Guatemala (seven points) and Panama which had maximum six points going into its match last night with Jamaica, which had one point.
In yesterday's other Group A match, the Arubans were hoping for their first point when they faced USA, which was also coming off a loss, 1-0 to Panama.
On Monday night in Group B at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, Mexico recorded a 2-0 victory over Canada to solidify its Group B lead with maximum six points after getting goals from Hirving Lozano in the 30th minute and second-half substitute Diego Pineda in the 92nd. In the two other Group B matches, Haiti rallied for 1-1 draw with El Salvador and Honduras broke open a scoreless stalemate by striking twice within five minutes in the second half en route to a 3-0 victory over Cuba.
A late penalty kick by Jonel Desire (88th minute) handed the Haitians their first point after Jose Villavicencio - scorer of a dramatic 90th minute equalizer from the penalty spot in a 2-2 draw with Honduras on Saturday put El Salvador in front, 1-0, in the 27th minute.
For Honduras, Alberth Elis (60th), John Suazo (65th) and Jhow Benavidez (83rd) tallied in the second-half.
Today, El Salvador and Canada meet from 4 pm (TT time) followed by Mexico against Honduras (6.30 pm) and Haitia versus Cuba from 9 pm, all at the Montego venue.
