Emile Ramsammy continued his dominance of local racing yesterday, when he landed four winners on the Arima Race Club's eight race card at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.
Ramsammy dominated the local programme and landed the Derick Mosca-trained favourite, Free Passage, in the feature Grade Two Starlight Stakes over 1,350 metres on the main track.
The 2012 Derby winner was sent off as the 4/5 favourite to win the $60,000 first prize cheque for owner Juan Navarro. However, Free Passage did not leave the gates as alertly as is customary and had backers holding their breaths, as the horses went to far turn.At this point, Loan Shark was the leader from Slippery Sam, with Unquestionable sneaking up the inside, as Nettoyer and Onetokeep beat a retreat. But Free Passage began to make a move towards the leaders as well.
As the horses swung for home, Loan Shark still held a two-length lead from Slippery Sam and Unquestionable, with Free Passage making ground into fourth.However, with 300 metres to race, Loan Shark's strides began to shorten as Unquestionable challenged for the lead with Slippery Sam.No sooner had they made their bid than Ramsammy swept past on Free Passage, to win going away by 2 1/2 lengths. Unquestionable stayed for second with Slippery Sam third and the pacesetting, Loan Shark in fourth.
Free Passage registered the time of 1:23.18 for the trip.The day's leading rider was Ramsammy, who landed Central Square, Golden Dixieland, Free Passage and Diplomatic Cat.
Training honours for the day went to John O'Brien, who saddled two winners.Racing takes a rest next Saturday, but returns on Easter Monday with the running of the first classic of local racing's Triple Crown-the NLCB Easter Guineas.
