President Anthony Carmona is urging citizens to use Easter as a time to reflect on the importance of building a more loving and thoughtful society. In a media release, Carmona said Easter marked a period of celebration and thanksgiving for Christians worldwide. He said it was the high point of the Christian calendar as it commemorated the major events of events of the faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
He described the life of Christ as a "superior example of a life lived for others, of humility and love in action."Carmona encouraged citizens to commit themselves fully to fostering a greater sense of spiritualty, community and love in T&T.
"Love is not love, if it is not demonstrated," he said.
"Without action, even the grandest expression through words, rings hollow. Love, in essence, requires considering the other person's needs before your own." He said today's world is one which glorifies individualism and encourages people to "look out" for themselves and to disregard the needs of those around them. He said because of that, mistrust and cynicism are now regarded as sensible rather than selfish.
Referring to a speech made by recently-elected Pope Francis, Carmona said people must be willing to step outside of their "own secure worlds" and reach out to those who are lost and in need of help."Love requires that we do not just stand back, look on, say much and do nothing," he said.
