As a spin-off from last week's topic of having a Victorian-themed wedding, this week I'll be sharing with you the very popular trend of having a "steampunk-themed" wedding. This theme can be best described as "Victorian era science fiction." Steampunk portrays the elegant and feminine aspects of Victorian era style but puts a modern and futuristic spin on it. It takes the look and feel of the 19th century into a fantasy realm that is more modernised than it actually was at the time–with steam-powered machines, flying contraptions and other types of mechanisation.
The "look" of a steampunk wedding is dark, whimsical and mysterious. It is also described as a mish-mash of Victorian, Gothic, Wild West, rock and vintage style. If you've watched and loved Tim Burton's movies such as: Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland or Batman Returns, then you may have an inclination towards Steampunk!
Other shows that also have a steampunk aesthetic are: the Harry Potter series, The Golden Compass, Sherlock Holmes, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Oz and Doctor Who.This trend has been around in North America and Europe for a while now, and whilst I haven't seen anyone do it in T&T yet, I thought it would be interesting to share with my readers. It's best suited for couples who love sci-fi and those who want to transport their guests to a world of fantasy. If you would like to try the steampunk theme, here are a few guidelines:
Fashion–Go for a vintage, quirky look by incorporating accessories such as an underbust corset, lace-up boots, hats, fascinators, corsets, cameos, broaches and gloves. Steampunk-inspired dresses will have corsets and skirts with bustles and ruffles. Guys can accessorise with bowler hats, top hats, pocket watches, canes, goggles, double-breasted jackets and three-piece suits.
Dcor–Centrepieces can be tablescapes of items such as these, in combination with flowers: clocks, lamps, globes, drinking flasks, glass light bulbs, vintage buttons, paper or metal flowers, antique typewriters, vintage cameras, hourglasses, medicine bottles, magnifying glasses, compasses, gramophones, rivets, gears and cogs.
Colours: Hues which lend themselves well to a steampunk feel are: brown, black, beige, silver, copper, gold, teal, red and plum.
