Indra Seegobin looks ten years younger since she quit smoking in 2006. After almost 25 years of smoking, it took one simple procedure. In just one hour, she achieved success without the use of drugs, gum, patches, hypnosis or needles; instead, she opted for a quick, painless and effective solution in laser therapy/treatment. The soft laser in laser therapy produces a beam of light at a high wavelength and low energy level with no more power than a 60-watt light bulb. It is a pure form of light energy of a specific colour, which has properties that are helpful in controlling addictions and enhancing relaxation. Fascinated by her accomplishment ever since she quit smoking, today she is the only certified Laser Therapist operating locally. She treats nicotine, cocaine and marijuana addictions at her business, Indi Day Spa and Laser Therapy. Located at Joyce Road Carapichaima since January 2011, she has been practicing since 2007 locally, however, Indra Seegobin is also a member of World Association for Laser Therapy (WALT), an organisation aimed at promoting research, education and clinical application of laser photostimulation world-wide. "The thing about laser therapy though, is not many people understand the concept" says Seegobin. "And when something is foreign to you, it sounds daunting. But it is a painless procedure- meaning no needles, no medication, no surgery and even no side effects." she explains. According to Indra, laser therapy is safe, non-invasive and has been proven to be effective worldwide with an astounding 90-95 percent success rate. In fact, laser therapy is now being coined as the best way to treat nicotine addiction. People like Glen Leanza, a smoker for 40 years who underwent laser therapy for nicotine addiction can testify to this, "I tried other methods to kick my nasty habit but as soon as the stress built up, I smoked." After using laser therapy, Leanza is now free from his addiction since 2010.
How does it work?
It involves the application of a laser beam that targets specific energy points located about the body, known as the meridian points. This helps stimulate the release of endorphins, our own natural body chemical, which helps with the relief of pain and stress. The laser treatment will put you back in control, help suppress your appetite, help you deal with cravings, and help make you less obsessed with your addictions. This simply means that the increased production of this chemical suppresses your urge for nicotine, and addiction. When you smoke, your body does not produce endorphins like a non-smoker. You rely on the cigarettes to give you the relaxing feeling which non-smokers get naturally on their own. Once you have the laser therapy session, it will trigger the release of the endorphins and your body will continue to release them as needed just as a non-smoker does. Specific meridian points are selected in the ear, face, hands, wrist and feet. Points of contact involve craving, withdrawal, anxiety, as well as a number of appetite suppression points that prevent the transfer of addiction to food, overeating and gaining weight. Low-level laser treatment calms and relaxes the mind, reducing anxiety and alleviating depressive feelings, which make it easier to cope with the addiction withdrawal symptoms and cravings that arise from giving up nicotine.
What is the first step?
"Don't be scared, you would be amazed," Indra says "This treatment is designed for smokers who would like to quit but cannot achieve that goal on their own. "If you come into the treatment and you're not ready, you're going to fall short. "In just two treatments you can become smoke free.- "The first step is to have a nicotine breathalyser test done to show the percentage of nicotine in the blood. "Any amount under 3.20 percent of nicotine is a candidate for two treatments. The second treatment must be done in 72 hours after the first treatment. "Any amount beyond 3.20 percent is a candidate for three treatments." From the time a client books his/ her appointment, they can continue smoking until the day of his/ her appointment.
What can I expect?
The treatment is totally painless and entirely safe. A cold, soft, low-level laser light contacts specific meridian points on the body, which aids in controlling addictions, enhancing relaxation and creating a state of well being while combating nicotine cravings. "The actual laser treatment takes 45 minutes to one hour to administer," Indra says. Indra also targets the psychological aspect of the treatment with a review of the treatment, addiction, behavior modification techniques and post visit instructions.
What reactions will I have?
You will feel a sense of relaxation and it is common for some people to feel drowsy. Rest is highly recommended after the treatment. Narine Kissoon, a smoker for 28 years who went through the laser therapy with Seegobin says he is not only nicotine free since his 2011 treatment, but he also feels more energised, his appetite has opened up and he feels healthier.
Is the treatment guaranteed?
You can come back for a second session, called a booster treatment within months from your first treatment. The reasons that people come back for a booster are usually stressful events in their lives, such as a tragedy or a loss, or being around smokers.
