Give Dew his due

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the death of one of Trinbago's finest artists, Dunstan E Williams (Dew). This generous and talented artist who extolled his southern roots, died on December 11, 2004 from renal failure. He touched many throughout his life, especially the disabled, with his great humour. Two media persons who understood the psyche of Trinis well were Keith Smith and Dew. DEW gave his life to the Guardian, and other environmental causes. The slaughter of the leatherback turtles had been his pet peeve, and the general apathy towards the environment. I think it is high time the memory of this great artist be honoured with the Dew Environment Cartoon Competition for young cartoonists. This will be a fitting tribute to the wonderful artist who has given us so much joy and laughter.

Dew was well respected locally, regionally and internationally. His achievements are many. One that stands out is his cartoon on the Columbus Quincentennial which was featured in the cartoon collection Political Cartoons Of Our Time. However, Dew was not too excited to draw political cartoons locally. He always felt that there was someone out there who will get him. Two years ago, the Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasters Association honoured him for his sterling contribution.
